Throughout the history of Richmond Hill, the city has experienced everything from failure to success and tragedies to victories. Today, Richmond Hill is a peaceful suburb located in southern Bryan County. Positioned within a 30-minute radius of Savannah, Richmond Hill offers a wonderful convenience to the nearby metropolitan city. This coastal town is home to more than 10,000 people. Richmond Hill’s community has an excellent reputation with great schools and education opportunities and a low crime rate. The schools of Richmond Hill persistently exceed the standards given by the state and are ranked in the top 5% in SAT scores. Ford also helped save and reconstruct the historical Fort McAllister to preserve it for later generations. Henry Ford is familiarly recognized for creating the Ford automobiles. He formed the Edison Botanic Society along with Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone to conduct lab experiments to transform agricultural products into materials that can be productively used in the auto industry. He renovated former rice fields into fields for iceberg lettuce and grew 365 varieties of soybean—technically, a soybean variety for everyday of the year! He tested the crops’ properties in hopes that rubber can be extracted from them. Henry Ford truly turned the desperate neighborhood into a flourishing town. The city of Ways Station was later renamed to Richmond Hill after the Fords’ estate. Henry Ford was such a significant figure of Richmond Hill that he has been honored with a full size natural color statue that is now located in the lobby of the Richmond Hill City Hall. The statue of Henry Ford was unveiled by Mayor Richard R. Davis and Professor John Jensen in 1999. Today, many historical structures in Richmond Hill are somehow tied in with Henry Ford. Examples of these points of interests are the Ford Courthouse, Ford Community House, Ford Plantation, and the Ford Kindergarten Building, which is the location for the Richmond Hill Historical Museum.
